What's a Wiki? Well, if you say, "Wiki, Wiki, Wah, Wah, Wah," you may just find out.  Ok, just kidding.  A wiki is a web site which allows anyone to edit the content. Did you know you are reading a wiki for this program? It's located at pbwiki.com. [ It's called pbwiki because " It's as easy to make as a peanut butter sandwich." :-) ]

To give you an understanding of Wikis, we are going to check out a video from Common Craft called Wikis in Plain English

  1. Read about wikis at How Stuff Works (a great site if you have never checked it out)

  2. So now it is time to find out how a Wiki works.  Visit Wikipedia, Wikihow, and Wetpaint. Search for a different topic on each site. Describe the different resources on your blog. Would you use a wiki for information? What are the benefits and drawbacks to finding information this way? What do you like or dislike about using a Wiki? Tell us what you think on your blog.

  3. Now that you are more familiar with wikis, you are going to learn how an entry is made on Wikipedia. Go to Wikipedia. Check out the editorial on editing at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Tutorial.  Once you have read the Tutorial, go to the Sandbox and play around with putting something on a Wiki.

  4. Once you have played in the sandbox, tell us what you did and how you liked/disliked it on your blog. Did you know that we have started a Wikipedia page for the Park Ridge Public Library.  Check it out and let us know what you think.

Want to try even more? (optional)

Now that you have learned how to make a Wikipedia entry, pick a different wiki (like Wikihow orWetpaint) and choose an article to edit or create a new article on one of them.  Then tell us which you chose and how it went on your blog.
